Looking for a golden retriever stud?

Southern Water Dogs offers stud services of our proven AKC golden retriever sires through natural breeding and artificial insemination.

We currently offer stud services from one of our males in our breeding program. Moshe is a 80 pound gentle giant who absolutely adores people. He comes from a long line of Champion and Grand Champion AKC golden retrievers including his grandparents and his great-grandparents, and has a classic golden retriever look with a blocky head and stocky, muscular build. His fur is very dark blonde and he has a long, silky coat. Moshe was featured in Garden & Gun Magazine in 2021 for his adventures in the snow, and consistently wins over the hearts of our prospective puppy parents.

You can trust in happy and healthy pups from the genetics of our stud dogs. We screen for hereditary conditions and diseases occurring in golden retrievers through genetic and radiographic testing through Paw Print Genetics and the Orthopedic Foundation of America (OFA), and we only offer stud services and litters when our breeding stock passes these tests. Specifically for the golden retriever breed, we test for Degenerative Myelopathy, prcd-PRA, GR-PRA1, GR-PRA 2, Ichthyosis, NCL5, as well as OFA testing of the hips, elbows, heart and eyes.

Common questions about stud services:

Typically breeding occurs on days 10-14 of your dam’s breeding season.
Stud services are offered through natural breeding, artificial insemination, or using frozen semen. Natural breedings are the most simple way to breed your dam, and typically the female is brought to the location of the male. Artificial insemination and frozen semen is collected by a veterinarian, is shipped to your location, and prevents the need to travel to the location of the stud.
A breeder will charge a stud fee, or alternatively, might ask for a pick of the litter puppy from your dam’s litter.

Southern Water Dogs charges a $1,500 stud fee for natural breedings. We also offer artificial insemination services, which cost $1,500 plus collection and shipping fees as charged by our veterinarian. Quotes for collection and shipping fees available upon request.

It’s important that a contract is formed between the owner of the dam and the owner of the stud dog to ensure conditions are agreed upon before the breeding occurs.

At Southern Water Dogs, we offer one additional stud service at no charge if the first breeding doesn’t result in a positive pregnancy. Since our studs are proven before being offered as stud services, a negative pregnancy result typically means there was a problem with the breeding, the female’s cycle, or the female’s ability to get pregnant.

We’re pretty laid back here, and we are happy to work with you to foster the best results possible for your litter. A typical stud service looks like this:

  • Owner of dam comes onsite in Asheville, NC for a site visit or participates in a Facetime call to meet our stud
  • Estimated breeding dates are agreed upon and scheduled
  • Stud contract is reviewed and signed by both parties
  • When it’s time for the breeding, the dam is brought to our facility and stays overnight inside our home. Dam owner provides care instructions so that the dam is comfortable and happy during her stay with us. We aim for 3-5 ties while the dam is on site. Alternatively for live collection, the stud is brought to our veterinarian for semen to be collected and shipped.
  • After about 24 hours, the dam is picked up and stud fee is paid in cash
  • After 30 days, the dam owner has an ultrasound performed at their veterinarian, and notifies Southern Water Dogs of a successful pregnancy and estimated number of puppies in the litter. If the pregnancy was unsuccessful, the dam owner provides any additional information from the veterinarian about why the breeding might not have been successful, and a second breeding is planned.
